A man accused of stabbing a Philadelphia park ranger on Sunday has been charged with ethnic intimidation, authorities say.
The defendant, Thomas Riceman, 34, is also charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and terroristic threats, according to a Philadelphia Police Department spokesperson.
Police said they responded to reports of an assault in Rittenhouse Square Sunday afternoon and discovered the victim in the park’s guard booth with several stab wounds.
The victim, who worked inside the security booth, told authorities that the suspect entered the booth and lay down before the alleged attack.
When the victim ordered the suspect to leave, he “suddenly attacked,” stabbing him in the face and head with scissors, according to authorities.
According to police, the ethnic intimidation allegation was brought after the defendant allegedly instructed a park ranger to “go back to his own country.” Despite being hurt, police say the victim was able to handcuff the perpetrator and detain him until police came. The man was taken to a hospital, where police said he was last classified as stable. Source
