SHAWANO, Wis. – A fisherman in the area saved a 68-year-old man from Shawano County on Wednesday morning after he crashed his car down a slope and into the Wolf River.
Officials from the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office got a call about a crash involving only one car on Highway 29 near Highway 22 in Belle Plaine.
Someone fishing in the Wolf River saw a car in the water with a severely hurt 68-year-old man inside.
Based on what was found at the scene, the man was driving west on Highway 29 around 3 a.m. when he went into the middle, missed the guardrails, and drove off the road, into the river.
The driver told the police that he had been yelling for help while lying in the water for several hours while hurt. The crash site is out of the way, according to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office. This means that no one could hear his cries for help until the fisherman found him.
The man was finally freed from the car, and he was taken a short distance down the river on a fire department boat to a safer area. He was then taken to a nearby hospital for medical care.
Highway 29 was closed for a few hours while several tow trucks tried to get the car out of the water.
The fisherman saved the 68-year-old, and the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office thanked him. There were no other information given.
